What a squawk actually is
The word comes from WWII's IFF ("identification friend or foe") system, code-named Parrot — controllers told pilots to "squawk" their parrot. How codes get assigned (and why they change)
Discrete codes are handed out by ATC computers from blocks allocated to each facility. A flight from Chicago to Denver might squawk one code the whole way, or get re-assigned crossing sector boundaries if there's a conflict — two aircraft with the same code in one sector would blur into each other on legacy radar.
